Diabetes, mellitus is a chronic disorder characterised by insulin

deficiency, hyperglycemia, and high risk for development of complications of the eyes, kidneys, peripheral nerves, heart and blood vessels. The disease is highly prevalent. Diabetes is the most common cause of new cases of blindness in adults, kidney failure, and non traumatic limb amputation.

Relationships of HbA1c values to mean blood glucose and to risks for developing chronic diabetes complications have been established.

The ADA Clinical Practice Recommendations now recommend using HbA1c to diagnose diabetes using a NGSP – certified method (available at Park Diagnostic Centre) and a cutoff of HbA1c > 6.5%. Point of care assay methods (such as Naco Card etc used by many Laboratories) are not recommended for diagnosis.

Lowering A1c to below or around 7% has been shown to reduce microvascular and neuropathic complications of type I and type II diabetes. Therefore, for microvascular disease prevention, the A1c goal for nonpregnant adults in general is <7%.
